The initiative was led by the Department of Physics and Ecology.

The main objective of the excursion was to enhance students’ environmental knowledge, strengthen their practical understanding of biodiversity conservation, and observe the principles of sustainable development in a real-world context. This initiative aligns with MDU’s “Green Campus” approach and supports the promotion of environmental education and responsible behavior in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

During the excursion, participants were provided with detailed information about the natural and geographical features of the reserve, its rich flora and fauna, and conservation mechanisms by the Director of the reserve, Galib Mehdiyev, Chief Researcher Malahat Zangiyeva, and Senior Researcher Gulmira Rzayeva.

The program began with a visit to the Zagatala Nature Museum, where participants received a comprehensive presentation on the museum’s history and activities. It was noted that the museum, established in 1959, is the only specialized natural heritage institution of its kind in the region. Its primary mission is to promote nature conservation, raise public environmental awareness, and enhance knowledge about biodiversity. The museum exhibits over 100 species found within the reserve, prepared using modern taxidermy techniques to ensure long-term preservation.

Participants then explored the reserve itself. It was highlighted that the Zagatala State Nature Reserve, established in 1929, is located on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus and covers an area of 47,349 hectares, with elevations ranging from 650 to 3,646 meters. The reserve is recognized as one of the most biodiverse regions in Azerbaijan, hosting more than 1,000 plant species—approximately 25% of the country’s flora—including 67 rare species listed in the Red Book. The area is also rich in fauna, including species such as the East Caucasian tur, Caucasian red deer, brown bear, lynx, and other rare animals.

As part of the excursion, students also became acquainted with the natural landscape elements of the reserve. Landmarks such as the Zagatala Waterfall, Pichigel Cave, and Khalakhi Lake attracted significant interest. It was noted that waterfalls, caves, and historical monuments in the area are key factors enhancing both the ecological and tourism potential of the region.

It should be emphasized that the practical experience gained during the excursion contributes significantly to reinforcing students’ theoretical knowledge, fostering a responsible approach to environmental protection, and integrating sustainable development values into the educational process.

An educational excursion to the Zagatala State Nature Reserve and the Zagatala Nature Museum was organized with the participation of faculty members, master’s students, and undergraduate students majoring in “Ecology” and “Ecological Engineering” at Mingachevir State University (MDU).
