On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the January tragedy
Scientific-theoretical conference was held at Mingachevir State University
On January 19, Mingachevir State University hosted a scientific-theoretical conference on the 29th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy. At the conference, the memory of the Martyrs was commemorated with a minute of silence.
Akif Hajiyev, rector of Mingachevir State University, said that January 20 tragedy is a honor and heroic page of our history and that the terrorist act against the Azerbaijani people on that day was one of the most serious crimes against humanity. He noted that the tragedy is eternal in the memory of our people and at the same time, it is written as a day of honor and heroism in our history.
Akif Hajiyev recalled that national leader Heydar Aliyev made a sharp statement at a press conference in Moscow on Monday after the tragedy, calling the organizers of the massacres in Baku a criminal, political assessment of what happened and demanding the punishment of the perpetrators. He stressed that after the return of the Great Leader to the political power, he proclaimed the date of the National Mourning Day to perpetuate the memory of the martyrs, and the event was politically and legally assessed. The rector emphasized that the head of state, Ilham Aliyev, pays special attention to the memory of martyrs on January 20 and the social problems of their families.
Then Vusala Movlayeva, the teacher of “Humanities” chair, told about the socio-political situation in Azerbaijan in the late 80s of the 20th century. National Awakening “; Matanat Yusifova, a senior teacher at the Department of Humanities, said: “January 20 tragedy is a heroic chronicle of our nation’s struggle for national liberation struggle”; Dean of “Pedagogical” faculty, PhD in history, associate professor Nizami Zeynalov delivered a speech on “Political and legal assessment of January 20 tragedy”.
The speakers noted that this tragedy is one of the blood-written pages in the history of our people. At the same time, this terrible night has entered our history not only as a tragedy, but also as a heroic day of the Azerbaijani people’s struggle for independence, irreversibility and national liberation. The heroism, prowess and unity of the people during the events of January 20 are an example to all.
He underlined the importance of bringing truths about January 20 tragedy to future generations, stressing that these events were not forgotten and that the memory of innocent people would always be lived by our people.
Then the participants of the conference were shown a video clip dedicated to the 20 January tragedy.
At the end of the conference a literary and artistic composition dedicated to January 20 tragedy was presented with the participation of I and II course students of the “Pedagogical” faculty.
