The celebration of World Environment Day 2026 in Azerbaijan serves as another significant confirmation of our country’s growing role in the global environmental agenda, its increasing international credibility, and the consistent environmental policies it has pursued over the years.
Today, the world is entering a new stage of development. Climate change, diminishing water resources, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and environmental security challenges have become strategic factors that determine not only the future of individual countries but also that of humanity as a whole. In such a context, environmental protection is no longer solely an ecological concern; it is also an integral component of economic development, social well-being, national security, and our responsibility toward future generations.
As noted by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, in his message on the occasion of World Environment Day, a clean environment and green growth are among the key priorities of our country’s development strategy. Azerbaijan’s successful presidency of COP29, its contributions to global climate diplomacy, the implementation of green energy projects in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, the development of “Smart City” and “Smart Village” concepts, and initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity have further strengthened the country’s international standing in the field of sustainable development.
Azerbaijan’s hosting of World Environment Day in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme is therefore no coincidence. This important event reflects our country’s active participation in addressing global environmental responsibilities, its commitment to international cooperation, and its dedication to building a greener future.
I believe that higher education institutions have a special mission in this process. Modern universities are not merely centers of knowledge transfer; they are also strategic hubs where green thinking is cultivated, a culture of social responsibility is promoted, innovative solutions are developed, and sustainable development values are embedded within society.
At Mingachevir State University, the implementation of Green Campus initiatives, efforts to improve energy efficiency, the expansion of digital and paperless management systems, environmental awareness programs, effective waste management practices, and the active engagement of students in socio-environmental projects all represent practical manifestations of this vision.
We believe that the university of the future is not only a center of science and education but also a model public platform where environmental responsibility, civic consciousness, and a culture of sustainable development are fostered. In this regard, every student, academic, and staff member plays an important role in building a greener future.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, I would like to emphasize once again that protecting nature is not only the responsibility of the present generation but also a moral obligation to future generations. Azerbaijan’s green development strategy, the strong political will demonstrated by the country’s leadership in this field, and the growing environmental awareness of our society provide a reliable foundation for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
