Seminar on the impact of invasive species on ecosystems held at Mingachevir State University

A seminar on “Invasive Species and Ecosystem Balance” was held at Mingachevir State University for first-year students majoring in Chemistry and Biology Teaching, delivered by Aliye Mirzayeva, a lecturer at the Department of Physics and Ecology.

The main objective of the seminar was to provide students with knowledge about the key factors threatening biodiversity, the impact of invasive species on ecosystems, and modern approaches in this field.

During the event, it was emphasized that invasive species are not only “foreign” species but also a serious threat to ecosystems. It was noted that, in addition to disrupting ecological balance, these species cause significant damage to the global economy, with annual losses exceeding 400 billion US dollars.

The seminar presented specific examples such as Mnemiopsis leidyi, which negatively affects fisheries in the Caspian Sea, as well as the box tree moth, which causes serious ecological damage in the forests of the Caucasus.

At the same time, the importance of the “three-line defense” approach in combating invasive species—customs control, early detection, and rapid response mechanisms—was highlighted.

The seminar continued with interactive discussions, where students’ questions were answered and an exchange of ideas was conducted.

It should be noted that Mingachevir State University regularly organizes such awareness-raising events aimed at protecting biodiversity, ensuring sustainable ecosystem management, and strengthening environmental awareness among students.
