On March 3, 2025, a scientific seminar on the topic “Aquatic Biodiversity and Protection of Rare Species” was held at Mingachevir State University, organized by the Department of Physics and Ecology. The event took place at the university’s GEOLAB laboratory and aimed to increase students’ scientific knowledge about aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of rare species.
The seminar was moderated by Tarana Yusibova, Head of the Department of Physics and Ecology. The event began with the screening of an educational video dedicated to the topic. During the opening remarks, the importance of protecting aquatic ecosystems, the role of biodiversity in sustainable development, and the strategic significance of preserving rare species for future generations were emphasized.
Within the seminar program, presentations were delivered by faculty members of the department in several key areas. Aliya Mirzayeva, a lecturer at the Department of Physics and Ecology, delivered a presentation titled “Silent Heroes: From Phytoplankton to Whales”, highlighting the interconnected roles of aquatic organisms within ecosystems and their importance in maintaining ecological balance. Another lecturer of the department, Rufana Zahidzade, presented on “The Hidden Treasure of the Blue Planet: The Strategic Importance of Aquatic Biodiversity and the Protection of Rare Species”, emphasizing the global significance of conserving aquatic biodiversity for ecological security and the sustainable management of natural resources. Afsana Babayeva, also a lecturer at the department, delivered a presentation titled “Management of Aquatic Biodiversity Based on an Ecosystem Approach”, addressing the application of modern ecological methods in the management and conservation of natural resources.
Following the presentations, extensive discussions were held with participating students on the topics addressed. It was emphasized that the protection of aquatic biodiversity is not only an environmental issue but also a vital necessity for the well-being of future generations and the sustainable use of natural resources.
It should be noted that the GEOLAB laboratory operating at Mingachevir State University provides important opportunities for students to study ecological processes more closely, apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical environment, and become familiar with modern research methods. Such scientific events contribute to the development of students’ ecological awareness and promote the principles of sustainable development.
