As part of “Climate Week,” Mingachevir State University (MSU) organized a roundtable debate on “Causes and Consequences of Climate Change” with students from the Environmental Engineering programs, hosted by the Department of Natural Sciences. The event provided students with the opportunity to explore the causes of climate change in depth, engage in scientific discussions, and reflect on strategies to mitigate future climate crises.
During the debate, participants discussed the main drivers of climate change, including industrialization, greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and other anthropogenic factors. They also examined both the evident consequences, such as global warming, rising sea levels, and the intensification of extreme weather events, as well as the hidden, long-term effects, including soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and ecosystem disruption.
The debate was moderated by Gulmira Mammadova, a faculty member of the Department of Natural Sciences, who guided students in presenting evidence-based arguments and considering multiple perspectives. The moderator also emphasized the importance of individual and collective actions in addressing climate change.
The event offered students not only the opportunity to expand their scientific knowledge but also to develop a sense of social responsibility, explore practical solutions to climate challenges, and gain unique experience that will help them become active professionals in the field of climate science. At the conclusion of the debate, participants highlighted the importance of collaborative initiatives and discussed the continuation of university-led programs aimed at climate education and awareness.
