Another initiative aimed at solving environmental problems through innovative approaches has been implemented at Mingachevir State University (MDU). A hackathon titled “Kura River Reservoir Plastic Pollution – Innovative Cleaning” was organized through the joint initiative of the Institute for Sustainable Energy and Regional Development, the Department of Energy Engineering, the Department of Physics and Ecology, and the Department of Mechanics.
The main objective of the event was to draw attention to the issue of plastic waste observed in the Kura River and the Mingachevir reservoir, create conditions for developing innovative technological solutions in this field, and contribute to shaping students’ ecological awareness. At the same time, the hackathon encouraged young people to apply their knowledge in engineering and technology to solving real-world problems.
During the event, participating students formed different teams and worked on ideas related to improving the collection, sorting, and recycling processes of plastic waste in water bodies. The projects presented by the teams focused particularly on the use of modern technologies, including automated cleaning mechanisms, devices designed to collect waste from the water surface, sensor-based monitoring systems, as well as the application of drones and other smart technologies.
Throughout the hackathon, participants not only developed technical solutions but also proposed various conceptual approaches by considering the social and awareness-raising aspects of environmental issues. Some teams presented proposals for creating public awareness platforms aimed at reducing plastic waste, while others suggested developing digital systems that would allow the early detection of pollution in water bodies.
At the final stage of the event, the teams presented their projects, explaining the technical features of their ideas, the mechanisms for implementation, and their environmental benefits. During the presentations, the practical application prospects, innovative approaches, and regional significance of the projects were discussed.
It was noted that such initiatives make an important contribution to revealing students’ creative potential, developing teamwork skills, and applying scientific and technological approaches to real problems. At the same time, these events play a significant role in promoting environmental responsibility and the principles of sustainable development within the university environment.
It is planned to further explore the possibilities of developing the ideas presented during the hackathon and transforming them into scientific research and practical projects. This initiative is considered an important step both in fostering innovative thinking among students and in developing new technological approaches aimed at solving environmental problems in the region.
