Mingachevir State Universty Universiteti Successfully Hosts “Zero Carbon EcoFest”: Green Transformation and Sustainable Campus Governance Take Center Stage

On May 15, 2026, Mingachevir State University hosted the “Zero Carbon EcoFest,” organized by the Department of Physics and Ecology, marking a significant milestone in advancing institutional sustainability and environmental stewardship, and within the framework of the event, contemporary approaches to green campus implementation, resource efficiency, energy optimization, and integrated waste management were discussed in a structured and analytical manner, aligned with the university’s long-term environmental strategy and sustainability roadmap.

Opening the event with a keynote address, Head of the Department of Physics and Ecology Tarana Yusibova emphasized that one of the primary challenges facing modern higher education institutions is not only the transmission of academic knowledge but also the cultivation of environmentally responsible thinking and the institutional integration of sustainable development principles, noting that initiatives such as “Zero Carbon EcoFest” play a critical role in strengthening green governance models, systematically reducing carbon emissions, and fostering a culture of efficient resource utilization across the university, while underscoring that ecological transformation is no longer optional but imperative, and that universities must go beyond teaching and research by delivering measurable outcomes through innovation and active collaboration with the real sector, with the initiatives implemented at Mingachevir State University serving as a strategic contribution to the development of a sustainable campus model and alignment with international environmental standards.

The panel discussions featured a diverse group of sectoral experts, including Anar Quliyev, representative of the Mingachevir Municipality, Fuad Baghirov, leading advisor of RETSI No. 8, Shahin Nagiyev, Deputy Head of the Technical Production Department at “Azerbaijan TPP” LLC, and Elnur Alakbarov, specialist in operations at the Mingachevir City Water Canal Administration, who delivered consecutive, insight-driven interventions addressing energy transition pathways, the balance between industrial development and ecological integrity, sustainable water resource management, and the enhancement of environmental resilience in urban ecosystems.

The initiatives and concepts introduced during “Zero Carbon EcoFest” contributed directly to strengthening environmental governance mechanisms within the university, enabling the deployment of practical tools for carbon footprint monitoring and optimization, while also fostering deeper engagement of students and staff in green transformation processes, and the outcomes of the event underscore the strategic importance of measurable sustainability indicators, performance-based environmental assessment, and the advancement of a competitive, internationally aligned green university model.

The festival further demonstrated that the integration of systematic environmental initiatives, academic expertise, and real-sector experience can position universities not only as centers of education but also as leading platforms for sustainable development and climate-responsive innovation.
